The Encyclopedia of the Cat
Published in Paperback by Hamlyn (15 April, 2001)
Authors: Angela Sayer and Howard Loxton
Average review score:

for those who appreciate the fabulous feline
This is a book that has lovely cat photography, and it also has a lot of interesting and useful information.
Part One, "The Development of the Cat", is about the evolution, history, and "The Worldwide Spread of Cats", which is a fascinating chapter, showing how they were exported from Egypt to the Roman world, and beyond.
Part Two: "The Breeds of the World", with photos, history, and color patterns of a myriad of common and rare felines.

Part Three: "Physiology and Behavior", with an excellent skeletal diagram, and descriptons of everything from the digestive system to the fur, a cat's senses, mating and reproduction, kittenhood, and more.
Four: "Care of the Cat"; from choosing a cat, preparing the home for its arrival, feeding, care and training, grooming, and more.
Five: "Health". Accidents and first aid, symptoms of illness, diseases, parasites, and more.
Part Six is about showing your cat, and what it takes to enter a show.

With a good layout, and extensively illustrated in color, it is well written by Angela Sayer, who is a breeder and judge of cats, and freelancer Howard Loxton. They both have much knowledge on this subject, and with the exception of a typo on page 149 (reversed captions on photos), have given those of us who love and respect our four pawed friends a winner with this volume.

The best catbook ever
I have been to the local bookstore twice just to get a look into this book. The pictures are just amazing and often captured the moment. For first-time catowner, more experienced owner or just catlovers this book gives you much of the information you need. Again the pictures are the best part of the book.

Engineering Drawing and Design
Published in Paperback by Gregg Division McGraw-Hill (January, 1979)
Author: Cecil Howard Jensen
Average review score:

What engineering is really all about
This book is what engineering is really all about- actually designing machinery and mechanical components to fill a need. I know that is why I got into the game several decades ago. Yet with all the management, scheduling, quoting, and clerical chores that are piled on engineers and engineering departments these days, it is easy to lose sight of why you chose this career in the first place. In fact, that's the only thanks you ever get in a largely thankless profession- the joy of occationally getting to design something that works.
This book is a rarity, it works as both an introductory text, as a design text, and as a life long reference book. I've taken mine along on many an assignment long after I had discarded lesser texts and references to save weight.
You get the fundamentals of how to produce a useful, working, engineering drawing that the shop can actually use to produce a part (you would be amazed at how many CAD "experts" cannot do this.) Then you get detailed information on industrial processes and materials (casting, forging, cold heading, powder metallurgy, extruding, roll forming, electroforming, welding, plastic injection, etc.) Plus you get a good intro to standard design components like all types of fasteners, bearing, seals, couplings, clutches, speed reducers, etc.) Then, you also get excellent basics in speciality areas like sheet metal development, piping, jig and fixture design, fluid power, and structural drafting. The sections on beam equations, trusses, and strength of materials are quite clearly written and requires only a working knowlege of trig. You top it off with an appendix that covers everything from conversions and fastener specs to fit types and geometric tolerancing.
Whenever I get disgusted and start to question why I am still doing this after so many others have gotten out, I pick up this text and flip through it. It reminds me that America used to be known as the land of engineers- real engineers.

This Should Be the First Book in Your Engineering Library
Having started in engineering as a draftsman more than 40 years ago, I have seen them all ... and in my humble opinion this is the best book of its kind ever written. The authors, Jensen and Helsel, have bypassed most of the fluff, like how to sharpen your pencil, and go directly to the heart of the matter. They have packed more pertinent, practical how-to information and technical reference data in this book than you will find in any other five books of its size. The book is easy to read, and to find specifically what you need. Proper and in-depth coverage is given to the very latest in drafting standards in both metric and inch systems; including limits and fits, geometric tolerancing, shop practices, and also standard parts.

I started using this first edition of this book more than 20 years ago, and have found no other to compare with it, or any of the succeeding editions. If I had only one book to take with me to the job, it would be this one.

Epitaphs for the Living: Words and Images in the Time of AIDS

Epitaphs for the living words and images in the time of AIDS
I WAS IN GA. WHEN BILLY HOWARD WAS TAKING THE PHOTOGRAPHS FOR THIS BOOK I WAS VISTING AN AIDS PATIENT THAT IS IN THE BOOK, HE NOT ONLY WAS THERE AS A PHOTOGRAPHER, BUT AS A FRIEND. AFTER THE BOOK WAS IN PRINT HE CAME BY TO SEE HIM. I WOULD LIKE TO THANK HIM FOR THAT. THE BOOK IS GREAT . C.S.

Overall an emotional drive of discovering the world of AIDS.
The collection of words truly was an inspiration of life. After I finished reading the book, I had a new profound feeling about life. I feel that everyone should read this book once, because many of people in our materialistic society, including myself, take life for granted. But for me, that is a thing of the past. HAPPY READING!!!

The Execution of Mayor Yin, and Other Stories from the Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution
Published in Paperback by Indiana University Press (August, 1979)
Authors: Jo-Hsi. Ch'En, Chen Jo-Hsi, Howard Goldblatt, and Nancy Ing
Average review score:

Grim portrait of China during the Cultural Revolution.
The author gives a poignant picture of the distressing everyday life in Mao's China under the Cultural Revolution.
There is a power struggle at the top of the CP. The Red Guards constitute their own rule. The political decisions are unpredictable (sometimes for then against the farmers or the intellectuals).
The result is that the population doesn't know anymore what to do and where they are (suicides or attempts). They are terrorized by suspicion, house searches, forced migrations and ... are terrorizing each other.

In the story 'Chin-Chin's Birthday' defy two children each other to insult chairman Mao. When their parents learn that other adults heard it, they are panic-stricken.
In 'The Guard' is theft a norm for the Red Guards.
In 'The Execution of Mayor Yin' is Yin a victim of his non proletarian origin. Although totally innocent, he is convicted and executed by the Red Guards.

Masterfully written stories which create a grim and depressing atmosphere. Not to be missed.
I recommend also the poignant book by Nien Cheng 'Life and Death in Shangai'.

Well written fictional account of the Cultural Revolution
Very few works of fiction have been written regarding the Cultural Revolution in China, especially by people, like Chen Jo-Hsi, who lived through it. There are some very good memoirs chronicling the events, but Chen Jo-Hsi's moving work of fiction gives the reader an excellent insight into one of the worst instances of censorship of the arts in the world's history. In addition, it brings to light in a very poignant way, how dichotmous and arbirtary the policies and reform movements during this period actually were. The book contains eight short stories that takes the reader from Nanking to the countryside and demonstrates the affects of the Cultural Revolution on different types of individuals from the professor to the laborer, sometimes with heart-breaking results.

Explorations in Macroeconomics
Published in Paperback by Cat Pub Co (May, 1996)
Authors: James F. Willis, Martin L. Primack, and Grover Howard
Average review score:

Wonderful Text, Brilliant Writing
I needed a text to teach an economics class with and searched for weeks with little satisfaction. Then I ran across this under utilized text. The writing is "brilliant" and the authors, especially Mr. Myers seem to have a very firm and realistic grasp of the essential concepts of "Economics"

Outstanding Economics Narrative
This is an outstanding economics textbook. Can be used as a quick primer on what the basics of the field are all about. I believe that the author of this book is a truly remarkable and extraordinary individual and everyone should listen to him closely.

Exploring the Biomedical Revolution
Published in Paperback by Johns Hopkins Univ Pr (June, 2000)
Authors: Howard Hughes Medical Institute, Robert A. Potter, and Philip Leder
Average review score:

Absolutely wonderful book!
~This book is very well-written, composed of many short (c. 2 pg) articles on various subjects relating to biology/medicine, such as Sickle Cell disorder and Huntington's Disease. Not only are these articles very informative, they are interesting. ~On top of that, there are some really great pictures, including a pull-out poster of deadly microbes. ~The material covered in this book is fascinating, but it's not something that you think about every day (unless you're a biologist or you're really into biomedicine). It stimulates thought, and brings you to the realization that, yes, this is sort of cool. I was somewhat interested in the broad category of biology and medicine, but when I bought this book, I was affirmed in my belief that biomedicine is a remarkably intriguing field of study. ~I would strongly recommend this book to anyone remotely interested in biomedicine. It is a truly amazing book! 5 stars!

Focuses on explanations which are easy to understand
Exploring the Biomedical Revolution examines the work of frontline scientists and how they are changing the face of modern medicine, with chapters presenting articles on research enhanced by vivid color photos. Many titles on biomedicine are inaccessible to lay audiences; not so this book, which focuses on explanations which are easy to understand, yet with plenty of scientific detail added for those involved in health care. Highly recommended.

Fathering Like the Father
Published in Paperback by Baker Book House (December, 2002)
Authors: Kenneth O. Gangel, Jeff Gangel, Howard G. Hendricks, and Jeffrey S. Gangel
Average review score:

Transperent - Lets us see real life
Father Kenn and Son Jeff have written a winner. Biblical truths come alive as Kenn and Jeff let you look into their souls to see how they have wrestled with "Jeff's Story" and "Kenn's Story" at the end of each section. From the Bible they discuss fifteen attributes of God that relate to fatherhood and illustrated each one. Then they put flesh on them by Kenn and Jeff each letting us see how they have wrestled with each attribute in their lives. This is no antiseptic book that leaves you wondering how the attributes are lived in real life. Kenn lets us see how having God as his Father enabled him to overcome the scars from his own absentee father. It enabled him to become a father completely opposite from the one he had experienced. Jeff lets us see that having a father who worked at the fifteen attributes as well as a heavenly father who "is" the fifteen attributes is a great blessing--but is not, however, protection from being human. Jeff wrestled too, though in ways different from his dad's wrestling.
They don't leave us with just a description of "fathering like the father." Each attribute includes sections on "Making it Work," "Questions for Discussion," and "Father/Child Dialog." These help fathers wrestle with the same things Kenn and Jeff have successfully (though not perfectly as they allow us to see) wrestled with. They allow us to look into their lives in order to see our lives better.
I highly recommend this book for its biblical content, it's transparent presentation, and its helpful application.

Fathers New and Old Can Benefit
New fathers intimidated by the prospect of what their new responsibilities entail can find "Fathering Like the Father" a welcome addition to their reading list.

"Fathering Like the Father" is written by father and son Kenneth and Jeffrey Gangel. They bring in not only their experience together, but also their expertise in scholarship and understanding of God's Word.

Many books discussing fatherhood are based on pure psychology, even among Christian titles. "Fathering Like the Father" takes a different tack, focusing on the Scriptural basis for decisions a father must make in regard to rearing his child. This book can augment what James Dobson and Focus on the Family books teach. Likewise, PromiseKeeper men should connect solidly with the principles presented here.

Each chapter begins with a key passage and a biblical character. Chapter 11, "Find Us Faithful" highlights Elkanah and Psalm 146:5-9. It is followed by several pages discussing the related issues, using modern parables, statistical analyses, while driving home why the verses they chose are crucial. Jeffrey and Kenn then each has a subsection for their take on the passage and principle.

The chapters also include a few challenges in a section called "Making It Work," discussion questions useful in a small group or Sunday School/CCD context, and some things for father-child dialogue. It is meant to be read with a Bible open. If you find it as engaging as I did, your copy will be marked up with underlined sentences and quotes drawn from history.

Chapters include:
* Make 'Em Laugh: Humor
* An Officer or a Gentleman? Grace and Mercy
* Focus on the Father: Forgiveness
* The Ultimate Sacrifice: Love
* The Green-Eyed Monster? Jealousy
* Truth or Consequences: Truthfulness
* God's Friend: Friendship
* The Child Whisperer: Communication
* Lessons from an Old Man: Holiness
* Winning the Game: Discipline
* Find Us Faithful: Faithfulness
* A Gift from God: Wisdom

* Imitating Infinite Intimacy: Intimacy
* A Worthy Investment: Trustworthiness
* A Few Good Men: Goodness

It reads easily, and its challenges are backed by the author's own experience. I fully recommend "Fathering Like the Father" by Kenneth and Jeffrey Gangel.

Field Guide to Wilderness Medicine
Published in Paperback by Mosby (28 February, 2003)
Authors: Paul S. Auerbach, Howard Donner, and Eric Weiss
Average review score:

Field Guide to Wilderness Medicine
This is an excellent condensed version of the full text. It is the only medical field guide I have found that is written for a medical doctor instead of an EMT or paramedic in an austere environment. I am a physician in a military special operations unit and carry it on all deployments, whether in the U.S. or other countries. It is the perfect size to carry with my field gear and trauma pack, and is quick, easy to use, and reccommends very up to date and rapid treatment plans. A must have for all medical professionals practicing in the pre-hospital environment! For medical professionals going to remote locations that are limited by what they can carry on their back, very few texts/guides can be brought along. The solution to this limitation is simple; pack your Sanford, your Pharmacoepia, and THIS BOOK. It is the best text for it's size and weight available.

Excellent condensed version of Auerbach's original text
If you consider Auerbach's Wilderness Medicine text to be "The Bible of Outdoor Medicine," then this will be a welcomed addition to your reference library. The fieldguide takes many of the most important topics from the original text(such as high altitude emergencies, envenomations, and trauma management) and paraphrases them just enough to be of benefit to both the weekend outdoor warrior and the expedition medic. I particularly was interested in the various ways to utilize common outdoor gear and improvise traction devices for orthopedic injuries. This book is also great in that it is small enough to fit comfortably in your backpack or glove compartment, readily accessable when needed. I highly recommend adding this book to your home or office library.

For Self-Examination/Judge for Yourselves : Kierkegaard's Writings, Vol 21
Published in Paperback by Princeton Univ Pr (06 May, 1991)
Authors: Soren Kierkegaard, Edna H. Hong, and Howard Vincent Hong
Average review score:

Potent yet readable
This book, page for page, may be Kierkegaard's best ever. This is a rather slim volume, but is packed with Kierkegaard's most profound and life-changing philosophy. Compared to his other works (almost all of which I highly, HIGHLY recommend) this book comes across as one of the most potent and dense. Therefore, I would recommend this one first and foremost to a reader who is pressed for time and is intimidated by the sheer length of Kierkegaard's other works. If you have not devoted every minute of your spare time to reading every page of every book ever written by Kierkegaard, my first question, of course, is WHY NOT?!?!? What are you thinking??? Get with the program!!! I am willing to forgive you, however, if you could just find time in your busy schedule to read this one slim pamphlet. It is the "Reader's Digest" condensed Kierkegaard for realistic 50-hour-a-week men, and it could radically change your life for the better. Profound, uplifting, loving, hopeful, and positive, I recommend this book to all readers.

Masterpiece of true Christianity
Kierkegaard exposes what it means to be a Christian. And be warned. It is impossible to read the book and walk away. A spiritual mirror is setup for those who dare to look. Individual's life including Scripture study is the core of this book.

For Your Eyes Only: Behind the Scenes of the James Bond Films
Published in Paperback by ECW Press (January, 2003)
Authors: David Giammarco and E. Howard Hunt
Average review score:

Excellent buy for any fan of the 007 films
If your a fan of the James Bond films and you want to know everything about the films than this is the book you have to buy. This book gives a great behind the scene look at the films and at the actors who portrayed the suave secret agent. Each actor is interviewed by the author, and share there point of view on Bond. Also each movie is featured and discussed. I think this book is very fun and a great read. I really enjoyed the authors style of writing and hope he writes a book like this about the Bond novels in the future.

The Definitive Bond book
Amazing! I've been a fan of the Bond films for over 20 years, and this is the first book that has brought together everyone's first-hand accounts. Almost every Bond book I've been disappointed with because they were written by arm-chair quarterbacks, but David Giammarco is a journalist who has been a part of the 007 world, spent time with most of the Bond particpants, and can truly write what it is like to be on set and behind the scenes. It is very well-written, with many interesting facts and stories that even I'VE never heard before! His interviews with Roger Moore were quite amusing, and reading Sean Connery tell his version of Bond-mania was very fascinating. Getting to hear Timothy Dalton and George Lazenby's side of the story was also quite interesting. It was also great to see how well Mr. Giammarco showcased Pierce Brosnan's contributions to the series. Mr. Brosnan has been vastly underrrated in the media, but this book gives us far more insight into the man and pays him his due rewards (after all, we all know Pierce is the best Bond since Connery!!!) The author and Pierce seems to have a really good relationship, and perhaps that why the normally reticent Mr. Brosnan opens up as much as he does.
Plus, you can't beat hearing all the many great stories from the "classic" Bond directors like Guy Hamilton and Peter Hunt, Ken Adam (his account of Connery almost being eaten by a shark during the shooting of Thunderball was quite funny)as well as the many Bond Girls, Villains, cast and crew. I liked what Desmond Lewelyn told the author and I learned a whole new side about lovable old Q.
Also, the contributions to the book from Hugh Hefner, Kevin Costner, Harison Ford, and that infamous CIA spook E. Howard Hunt were quite fascinating and take this book to a whole new dimension than those other Bond books.

It's clear Mr.Giammarco knows the Bond legacy inside and out and his access to everyone is an invaluable resource for us Bond aficionados. I've been waiting a long time for a book like this - a really fun read. I highly recommend it. No Bond fan will be disappointed!!!
